How did we get here?

This timeline shows major historical events that brough Lumiir to the state we find it in and sent Aer to Earth and back. During gameplay, players will uncover this information through lore discovery.

Years leading up to Aer’s awakening (start of the game)

-30: Murtaak and Aldebaran created ISTS, winning them government funding which they used to continue research into more advanced space travel. They built the original MurAlde Foundation headquarters near the Royal Citadel.

-26 to -20: Finding spaceships too bulky and expensive for long-distance space travel, the MurAlde Foundation shifts their focus to studying teleportation instead. The MurAlde Foundation intentionally fades out of the public eye to continue their research with as little oversight as possible. They complete their first successful teleportation, but the person’s body explodes seconds after arriving at the destination.

-20: After continued research, they find that while physical bodies destabilize during teleportation, the person’s spirit stays intact as long as it is provided a suitable host. Their experiments take a darker turn, using a “temporary” solution of stealing bodies of inhabitants in the destination planets to continue testing. Many test subjects ended up permanently stuck in unfamiliar bodies on distant planets.

-17: Creatures called the Soundless suddenly appear all over Iythara, starting with Lumiir. The first few were soon followed by entire armies, starting a horrendous war known as the Atrocity. The people of Lumiir are at a loss as to why they’re being attacked. Many notable people are killed, including the Emperor and Murtaak (co-founder of MurAlde).

-17: Azura, eldest daughter of the late Emperor, ascends to the throne and her baby sister, Aer, is chosen as the next Ascendant. Emperor Azura vows to keep the prophetically chosen heir safe, starting the Safe Haven Project and hiring MurAlde to come up with a solution.

-17: The MurAlde Foundation uses their teleportation process to send Aer’s spirit into a safe location on a distant planet called Earth, keeping her original body safe on Iythara. They assure the emperor that this process is ethical and safe, not admitting that this risky technology is still early in development.

-16: As one of the first known locations attacked in the Atrocity, the destroyed MurAlde Headquarters is rededicated as a memorial to the lives lost. The headquarters and other facilities important to Lumiir’s operations are rebuilt farther out of town, away from the heavily attacked Royal Citadel.

-16 to -2: Still grieving, Aldebaran continues to lead the MurAlde Foundation in their new facility without the level-headed Murtaak. They continue supporting the Safe Haven Project to keep Aer safe and develop new tools like the Babeler to assist with her eventual return. They continue their unethical teleportation experiments without much oversight.
